When you are browsing some good websites that have had some good SEO work done, you can “View Source” and see a meta tag like:
<meta name=”verify-v1″ content=”avKx26lvoxogR445X+5jGy8tpro3FZy1OXOXOXOXvnSI=” />
This is the verification code that you need to insert into your website when you use Google Webmaster Tools. After verification, you can now see 3 links with a “+” sign on the left hand side.
In “Site configuration”:
- you can submit an XML sitemap and Google will have their spider crawl through your pages within 10 minutes after you submit
- you can have Google test your robots.txt file or have Google Generate the robots.txt for you
- you can use their change of address tool to move your site to the new domain and Google will teach you how to do it
- you can set your geographic target, and crawl rate
In “Your site on the web”:
- you can see the top search queries by users that have returned pages from your site. (you will have to wait for one to two weeks for the correct query to show up)
In “Diagnostics”:
- you can see if there’s any crawl errors the spider found
- you can see the crawl states
- you can see the HTML suggestions
I would suggest you use Google Webmaster Tools since it offers so much for free. These tools can help you see if you set up anything wrong for your SEO and make sure that Google indexes all the pages you want to be indexed.
